Thala Varalaru (Temple History)
The name Thiruvaheendrapuram comes from Aheendran (Adishesha, the serpent).
The Rivalry and the Well: Legend says Lord Vishnu once asked Garuda and Adishesha to bring water. Garuda flew to the Vraja River, but he was delayed. To serve the Lord quickly, Adishesha struck the ground with his tail, creating a well. This became the Sesha Theertham (the temple well). When Garuda returned with river water, it became the Gadilam River (Garuda Nadi).
The Trinity Manifestation: During a battle between Devas and Asuras, Lord Vishnu appeared here to protect the Devas. To show that the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) are one, He manifested with the attributes of all three. This is why the processional deity (Utsavar) is called Moovaraagiya Oruvan.
Oushadagiri Hill: The small hill opposite the temple is believed to be a piece of the Sanjeevani Mountain that fell when Hanuman was carrying it to Lanka. It is home to the Lord Hayagriva shrine.
